For students entering grades 2-4 (current 1st-3rd graders), we are offering several courses, listed by session below. Course fees are $150 each, plus materials fees as noted.
Session 1A: July 7-18, 9:00-10:20
- Get Creative
Come and spend the Summer exploring your creativity. Use pastels, paints and various other materials
to make your own masterpieces. Instructor: Mrs. Michelle Dzigurski. Materials fee: $20.
- Basic Math Skills
Want to improve your computation, accuracy, and math maintenance skills? Take the Math Skills Review
class offered to students in grades 2-4. Students will use a variety of methods to master basic math
skills: manipulatives, pair/share, student teaching, create your own word problems, outdoor math
activities, and more. Each student will take home a Math Tool Kit, as well as a personalized
evaluation at the end of the session, documenting strengths and challenges. Instructor: Mrs. Laura
Gremett. Materials fee: $10.
- Hands-On Science: Living Things
The first session of Hands-On Science will
explore a variety of sciences: biology, botany, zoology, and forensics. Some activities include
detective labs and exploring the plant and animal kingdoms. Students will have the opportunity to
explore their natural curiosity while learning scientific skills. Instructor: Mrs. Sarah DeCarlo.
Materials fee: $20.
Session 1B: July 7-18, 10:40-12:00
- Clay Animation
Clay and animation—what a perfect combination! Working in teams, students do it all—from story
creation to making the characters and sets. As they learn the production process, they will animate,
record, download, assemble and edit their own movie. Class will conclude with a student "film
festival," and students will receive a DVD of their work after class. Instructor: Ms. Jessica
Parsons/Computer Explorers. Materials fee: $10.
- Creative Writing & Drama
Students will explore creative writing and drama through a reader’s theater production. They will
begin by developing a character through creative writing—detailing their character’s traits and
history, and writing a character monologue. Then they will create a puppet of their character and use
props to perform a puppet show of a reader’s theater. Instructor: Ms. Katrina Schwerdt. Materials fee:
$20.
- Beginning Conversational Spanish
Students will learn Spanish through fun interactive activities, engaging in physical actions to help
them increase their understanding. Students will be immersed in the language through theme-related
lessons, including: vocabulary, games, poems, puppets, food, music, dance, songs, stories, and more.
Instructor: Mrs. Maria Vazquez. Materials fee: $10.
Session 2A: July 21-Aug 1, 9:00-10:20
- Strings and Things
During this class the children will experience weaving in many forms. We will also focus on working with
many other materials in three dimensional form. Instructor: Mrs. Michelle Dzigurski. Materials fee: $20.
- LEGO® Engineering
This exciting hands-on engineering class combines LEGO® Education & LEGO®
Technic™ materials to explore motorized simple machines by building realistic models. Student teams
creatively solve challenges using concepts learned in class. A possible primer for St. Simon’s Junior
FIRST LEGO® League team next Fall. Instructor: Computer Explorers.
- Hands-On Science: Chemicals and Machines
The second session of Hands-On Science will explore another variety of sciences: chemistry, physics and forensics. Some activities include bubble science, creating simple machines, and detective labs. Students will have the opportunity to explore their natural curiosity while learning scientific skills. Session 2B: July 21-Aug 1, 10:40-12:00
- GPS Adventures
Get a new perspective on the world! Use hand-held Global Positioning Systems to search for treasure caches
and leave replacement "valuables" for another adventurous group to find. Play geogolf and go
geodashing! Learn the fundamentals of mapping and GPS technology and its practical uses in this
indoor/outdoor, action-based class. Instructor: Ms. Jessica Parsons/Computer Explorers.
- Creative Writing & Drama

content is repeated from previous session; however, interested students are welcome to repeat the class,
taking on different characters and performances. Instructor: Ms. Katrina Schwerdt. Materials fee: $20.
