Our computer education program follows the San Jose Diocesan Technology Masterplan for Computer Education and emphasizes the integration of technology with our academic curriculum. The K - 8 program is based on a skills continuum model in which each successive level builds on and expands the computer and academic skills acquired in the previous level. These are some of the topics covered by grade level:
Introduction to computer operations using the keyboard, hardware/software functions, basic computing vocabulary, and menu-driven software. Effective use of a variety of computer-assisted instructional software (including drill and practice, tutorial, and higher level thinking); expansion of concepts and vocabulary. Introduction to disk operations, mouse skills, software navigation with GUI (Graphical User Interface), basic concepts of word-processing. Introduction of Internet navigation skills through age-appropriate activities including online lessons in technology literacy. Introduction of keyboarding skills. Introduction of simple draw tools and manipulation/editing of draw graphics. Use of simple file menu operations.
Increased understanding of computer operation and greater development of computing vocabulary; continuation of keyboarding skills via tutorial software and online lessons; introduction to basic multimedia research skills (electronic encyclopedia, atlas, etc.) using CD-ROM technology and disks. Effective use of at least one word-processing/desktop publishing program (introduced in Grade 4, mastery acquired by Grade 8). Employment of various technologies as tools for personal productivity and presentation. Continued use of Internet resources, with emphasis on search tools. Introduction to basic HTML coding and web page authoring. Introduction to and acquisition of presentation software. Introduction to digital still photo editing. Continuation of online lessons in technology literacy.
Continued development of technological vocabulary and concepts. Utilization of acquired skills in the design, implementation, and presentation of an original, curriculum related, multimedia project. Continued keyboarding skills practice. Continued use of Internet skills. Acquisition of word processing/desktop publishing skills. Practice with digital photo and movie editing skills. Introduction to and acquisition of spreadsheet applications. Continuation of online lessons in technology literacy.
In addition to the topics listed above, age appropriate, guided instruction is given regarding ethical use of technology and the safeguarding of copyright laws. Students are expected to adhere to the rules and code of conduct as described in the Technology User’s Contract.
In Grades 6-8, technology classes are conducted in the classrooms using individual laptops. Students are instructed in the topics listed above, and their work is saved in their individual accounts on the school server. In addition, classroom and special subject teachers of Grades 4-8 may use the laptops with their students for extra projects in support of their grade level curriculum.
